Role: Painter/Detailer

Position Description Undertake painting detailing and laboring duties to The Wooden Boatshop standard, as well as best practice procedures. Job inclusive of the following:

  • Management and responsibility for organisation of detailing equipment.
  • Preparation and application of paint finishes, 2 pack polyurethane, epoxy, enamel, oil, varnish and antifoul in line with The Wooden Boatshop procedure, instruction from management and OH&S guidelines
  • Detailing and cleaning in preparation for launching of boats. Includes masking removal, paint residue removal, window cleaning, cover washing, vacuuming, washing and polishing paint work
  • Reporting to management items on boats that require attention beyond the scope of instruction or deviations from The Wooden Boatshop procedures 
  • Assisting yard manager with all aspects of yard operations as requested by instruction
  • Site cleaning in boatyard after completion of tasks, including rubbish collection and removal, stacking of shoring blocks, yard stands, ladders and boatyard equipment
  • Ability to document time and material for all operations on a continual basis
  • Availability for additional work hours during peak times and demonstrate a comitment to the completion of set tasks
  • Ability to follow instruction and respond to constructive criticism in a positive manner and adhere to The Wooden Boatshop HR Policy and Procedure Manual

Role: Boatman/Boatwoman

Position Description
We are seeking an individual with experience in launching and retrieving boats of varying sizes. The candidate must have broad maritime capabilities and experience, with an emphasis on the following:

  • Experience driving and operating large vehicles
  • Experience taking boats on and off moorings
  • Capable at manoeuvring boats
  • Adept at working solo and within a team environment
  • A passion for boats
  • Ability to multitask
  • Forklift experience a bonus
  • Candidate must have boat and car licence

Role: Apprentice Shipwright 

Position Description
We invite expressions of interest by those seeking to undertake a boatbuilding apprenticeship. Candidates must possess an enduring passion and curiosity for wooden craftmanship and traditional wooden boats, as well as a desire to learn and grow as part of a team. Boatbuilding often becomes a lifelong pursuit; we are looking for individuals who will take pride in their work and strive toward reaching excellence in the art of boatbuilding. Job requirements include the following:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to think laterally
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • A strong work ethic and passion for boating and community
  • Ability to work under guidance within a teaching context
  • Understanding of materials and woodworking skills
  • Boat construction and maintenance
  • Scope to understand boat design and history of seafaring

Role: Apprentice Sailmaker

Position Description
Candidates will have the opportunity to learn from our in-house sailmaker about all aspects of sail design, construction, maintenance and repair. This position will suit someone who enjoys practical challenges, is immaculate in their attention to detail and is eager to innovate in this expansive new role at the Wooden Boat Shop. Ideally, we are seeking an individual with previous experience in a marine trimming role such as a 3rd year apprentice or a Certificate III in automotive and marine trimming technology. Job requirements include the following:

  • Ability to self-motivate
  • Yacht sail design, construction and repair
  • Boat covers and upholstery design
  • Expertise in textile selection
  • Creative tendencies and ability to multitask

Role: Apprentice Marine Mechanic 

Position Description
We are seeking an apprentice marine mechanic to work closely with our in-house mechanic in servicing a large fleet of diesel engines both in our yard and offsite on moorings and at marinas. The individual must be enthusiastic, reliable, punctual and eager to expand their knowledge and skillset. Job requirements include the following:

  • Diagnosing and repairing 12-volt electrical systems
  • Repair, service and maintenance of petrol and diesel engines
  • Work with various marine propulsion systems
  • Car and boat licence preferred or willing to obtain
  • Neat and tidy in all aspects of work
  • A strong commitment to quality work
  • Understanding of Yanmar range
