The Wooden Boat Shop (WBS) is renowned for their range of classically styled luxury wooden launches comprising of the Nepean 30, Cheviot 32, Efficient 44 and the Shearwater 38. For the past year and half, construction has been underway to build the largest vessel the WBS team has built to date, the Deal Island 50, which is the first of the 50’ fast ocean cruisers.
Named after one of Tim Phillips’ (WBS Director) regularly visited favourite anchorages, the Deal Island 50 is the perfect cruising boat encompassing everything needed for the keen cruiser and fisherman. It combines the functionality of a fishing boat with the luxury and styling of any modern motor yacht or cruising yacht. Throughout the years, Tim Phillips has had vast experience cruising the Bass Strait islands in a range of boats including well-known restorations Storm Bay and Jane Kerr. After countless trips, it has become apparent that the vessels with work boat origins perform better in the Australian environment than others, leading to WBS’ design using work boat lines.
With the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Tasmania becoming an increasingly popular event for the wooden boat fraternity, it has now become a popular bi-annual voyage for wooden boat and cruising enthusiasts to make the journey from Port Phillip Bay to Hobart. The islands, coast and fishing are all important aspects of the journey and Deal Island 50 fast ocean cruiser was designed with this trip down the east coast of Tasmania in mind, based on the experiences of Tim Phillips and his travelling group. With the demand for this trip increasing on each occasion, space for entertaining and comfort have become larger priorities for boaties, and the Deal Island 50 allows for more people to enjoy this journey.
What makes the Deal Island 50 different to the previous models built by WBS? Her sheer space and flexibility for entertaining larger groups of people and accomodate families and multiple couples. She is perfect for a family or a syndicate of people looking for a boat for day trips and extended cruises. The increased interest in cruising has created more demand for boaties wanting to send their boats north for winter and go further afield. The exclusive Deal Island 50 has the flexibility for various layout options to suit a variety of accommodation requirements for a broad range of clientele. The Deal Island 50 has two variations to choose from when selecting the most appropriate layout for your needs.
The main engine, a Volvo Penta D13 1000 hp, drives a hydraulic pump and this system powers a 24v alternator, bow thruster and anchor winch. The 24v alternator is hydraulically driven at constant speed, and produces 300amps. This allows the battery system to be charged from flat to full in less than three hours. This streamlines the electrical system, saves weight and improves reliability. The electrical system is built with a 600 AH lithium house battery bank. The system can rapidly charge from empty to full and delivers any required power demand of power due to the lithium batteries capability of being cycled all the way down. The lithium battery system at about $3.18 per cycle is about 40% cheaper than comparable AGM or Gell batteries. The 24v lithium battery has an 800Ah capacity. The Air conditioning is able to run on battery for 5-6 hours. It is able to store about as much energy as the average house uses in a day.
