Episode 7 – Port Hedland to Darwin

The fleet departed Port Hedland in early June with some vessels making a
detour to the Rowley Shoals before regrouping in Broome. This was the last
chance to take on fresh produce before six weeks of self-sufficient cruising
through the Kimberley.

From Broome the fleet worked north past James
Price Point, Beagle Bay and Cape Leveque, before stopping at Cygnet Bay for
lunch at the pearl farm. From there the coastline became more remote. We passed
through Horizontal Falls, saw Montgomery Reef lift out of the sea as the tide
fell, and anchored beneath Raft Point where crocodiles slid quietly through the
anchorage.

The days slowed into a steady rhythm. At Langgi
Inlet the boats rafted together for music and dancing, while further inland
crews swam in freshwater pools above Cascade Falls. On Bigge Island, we came
ashore to see ancient Indigenous rock art. Wallaston Island offered oysters
eaten straight from the rocks, and at Cave Beach we joined other yachts for the
Kimberley Cruising Yacht Club’s annual Fourth of July gathering.

At Cape Londonderry the scenery shifted again,
leading us into Freshwater Bay and on to the King George River. Here sheer
cliffs rose above the anchorage and twin waterfalls plunged into the sea, a
highlight of the Kimberley coast. A final night was spent at Berkeley River
before the fleet made landfall in Darwin in mid-July.

Cruising the Kimberley in your own boat, at
your own pace, among friends and family is an experience like no other. It’s a
rare privilege to explore such a vast and rugged coastline on your own terms,
with the freedom to linger, share meals, and make memories in one of the most
extraordinary cruising grounds in the world.

Episode 6 – Perth to Port Hedland

Departing Fremantle in mid-April, the fleet headed north, tracing Western Australia’s Coral Coast. A brief stop in Geraldton allowed the crews to take on fresh supplies and visit the town’s moving tribute to the HMAS Sydney II before setting course for the offshore Abrolhos Islands.

At the Abrolhos, the fleet spent a week exploring in the company of local guide Mark Jackman. Known for their rich fishing grounds and the infamous Batavia shipwreck, these low-lying coral islands offered a mix of natural beauty and sobering maritime history.

North Island provided a peaceful anchorage, with sandy tracks and sea-eagles circling overhead, before the fleet made way for Shark Bay. Here, the crews visited Dirk Hartog Island—site of the first recorded European landing in Australia in 1616—before continuing on to Tantabiddi, where they swam alongside whale sharks off Ningaloo Reef.

In Exmouth, the crews paused to re-provision and enjoy a walk through the dry creek beds of Cape Range National Park, before heading back offshore to the Montebello Islands. Once the site of British nuclear tests, these islands now support fragile recovering ecosystems and offered excellent diving in clear, tropical waters.

Further north, the fleet visited Dampier and anchored off Depuch Island, where they came ashore to see ancient Indigenous rock carvings etched into the island’s volcanic stone.

The leg concluded in Port Hedland—a major working harbour where the red earth of the Pilbara meets the sea. After four weeks and more than a thousand nautical miles, Leg Three came to a close.

Episode 5 – Bremer Bay to Perth
After departing Bremer Bay, the fleet headed west to Albany, then navigated around the rugged West Cape Howe and on to Windy Harbour, where dramatic limestone cliffs rise sharply from the water. The journey continued with stops at Hamelin Bay, known for its friendly stingrays, and Cape Naturaliste, before reaching the sheltered anchorage of Bunker Bay.

Rottnest Island provided a welcome change of pace, with its calm bays and warm weather. The crew were warmly welcomed by locals, who provided moorings at Marjorie Bay and hosted a crayfish BBQ ashore. The final leg took the fleet into the Swan River, where they arrived at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, marking the end of Leg Two of the Around-Australia Cruise 2025.

Episode 4 – Port Lincoln to Bremer Bay
The contingent travel from Port Lincoln to Bremer Bay, tracing the remote southern coast of Australia. The journey navigates rugged cliffs, sweeping bays, and rich marine ecosystems, offering encounters with diverse wildlife. As the voyage unfolds, shifting waters reveal the region’s maritime history and untamed natural beauty, providing a rare perspective on this wild and windswept coastline.

Episode 3 – Port Lincoln to Bremer Bay
The vessels travel through Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour, a remote area in Tasmania’s Southwest National Park with unique wildlife. They continue to Strahan and cruise the Gordon River, passing ancient Huon pines and learning about the region’s Indigenous and convict history. This journey offers a rare chance to explore one of Australia’s last true wilderness areas.

Episode 2 – Hobart to Port Davey
The vessels depart Hobart and head south toward Kettering, Recherche and Maatsuyker Island, trying their hand at some Tuna on the way. The pots deliver a few crayfish and the ever shifting weather and landscape provide a spectacular backdrop.

Episode 1 – Sorrento to Hobart
The consortium of Wooden Boatshop vessels leave Sorrento and head south toward Hobart. At a leisurely pace they enjoy the local sights of Bass Strait and the east coast of Tasmania. The around-Australia trip officially begins after the Wooden Boat Festival, where they have reserved berths on Victoria Dock.

	“I’m now on a
flight heading back to Melbourne and reflecting on how truly amazing these
trips are. I’ve been lucky enough to have participated in Hobart to King Island
on Andy’s Francesca and Port Lincoln to Albany on Deano’s Diamond Bay. Needless
to say, these trips have been filled with unforgettable experiences.

On one hand you
have Tim and Sally who built these boats, have done these trips before, so
their wealth of experience and knowledge is quite extraordinary. On the other
hand you have the other boat owners who all share a love of wooden boats
together with thirst for adventure, whilst enjoying the benefit of Tim and
Sally’s knowledge and leadership and to top it all off they get to learn
everything about their boats whilst knowing that if all else fails help is
always happily very close at hand… plus they get to bring their families and
their mates on various legs. It really is a wonderful environment where
everyone is there for everyone, it’s difficult to describe how sensational it
is.

I’d say the vast
majority of boat owners don’t know very much about their boats and as a
consequence they don’t use them very much. I have no doubt this trip will
inspire everyone involved and everyone on this chat and beyond to get out and
explore much more of this wonderful country of ours.

Cheers to Tim (OAM for service to sailing and wooden
boat restoration just quietly) and Sally for making this happen.”

	Background
The Wooden Boatshop, founded by Tim Phillips OAM, was built on a shared
ethos of adventure, craftsmanship, and a deep love for the sea. Every vessel we
create is designed not just to navigate open water but to embrace it – offering
a perfect balance of seaworthiness, practicality, and pared-back minimalist
design. More than just boats, they are entertainers, built for those who
appreciate both performance and the joy of life on the water.

Tim Phillips OAM, Director of WBS, departed
Sorrento in 2011 aboard Murray Pass with
his wife, Sally, to circumnavigate Australia.

In 2019, he embarked on another
circumnavigation, this time aboard Jane Kerr.
Now, on his third circumnavigation, he is at the helm of Deal Island 50 Winter Cove.

On this journey, Tim is sharing his extensive
knowledge with owners of WBS-built vessels, passing down the skills,
traditions, culture and philosophy that have shaped The Wooden Boatshop. Through
hands-on experience and storytelling he continues to foster a community of
passionate boaters who uphold the spirit of adventure and seamanship at the
heart of every WBS creation.

Fishing boat origins

On the south-eastern coast of Australia,

 in the late 1970s Tim
Phillips OAM, along with a group of like-minded friends, begun
messing around in Couta Boats. The Couta Boats had been named after the
eponymous barracouta – the local fish caught off The Heads, and the most
popular fish of the day in the early 1900s.

&#60;img width="675" height="178" width_o="675" height_o="178" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/d0502a0584fda9c172e47671720ed3db387bfe3dfead5bf589936597c1fb5e14/Barracouta.jpeg" data-mid="115870377" border="0" data-scale="47" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/675/i/d0502a0584fda9c172e47671720ed3db387bfe3dfead5bf589936597c1fb5e14/Barracouta.jpeg" /&#62;

The
Couta Boat was a fast and seaworthy craft, and there had been a slew of local
boatbuilders who constructed beautiful and singular boats in the era, such as Andrew Hansen,&#38;nbsp;Mitch Lacco and&#38;nbsp;Peter Locke. Her lines
were clean and classic, and she was practical and efficient, having proved herself
in navigating under sail the treacherous waters off Pt. Lonsdale and Pt. Nepean in all
manner of conditions.

The
Couta Boats would head out from Queenscliff before dawn, often catching their
quota before racing back to port. Those first back would command the most desirable wharf position and fetch the best price for their catch. There was a competitive edge
embedded into the boats even in the early days. In fact, every so often the fishermen would organise a Couta Boat regatta, usually held on New Year’s Day or over the Easter long-weekend.

	&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;
The
demand was steep for Couta Boats, and right up until the Second World War there
was a shortage. With about 15 new boat builds a year, and an abundance of
barracouta, the Couta Boats were thriving. However, the boom years did not
last. Barracouta eventually became scarce due to overfishing, and the rise of gummy shark
as a popular eating fish saw the gradual decline of the Couta Boat fleet.

Humble beginnings&#38;nbsp;

By
the 1960s and early 1970s many Couta Boats were rotated out of use and sat
dilapidated in garages and backyards. Years later, Tim and his friends begun to
take an interest in these craft and set about restoring their own Couta Boats.
Thus, The Wooden Boatshop was born, and its early origins exemplify our ongoing
commitment to maintaining and preserving important and often long-forgotten
aspects of maritime history.

In
the early days The Wooden Boatshop was operated out of Tim’s carport in Delgany Avenue, Portsea.
Already a master carpenter, Tim undertook an informal boatbuilding apprenticeship
with Jack Norling, restoring Couta Boat Wattle and building 28’ Sally alongside Ken Lacco. As a local Couta Boat fleet begun to emerge Tim and
his mates started the Portsea Fishing Boat Regatta (now The Portsea Cup). As
the fleet kept growing, so too did The Wooden Boatshop. We now occupy 3-acres of land in the heart of Sorrento, where we service and build hundreds of boats
throughout the local area.

Committment to craft

Our yard comprises a sail making
loft, mechanical workshop, multiple marine engineering factories, a well-stocked
boat chandlery, boat storage, flagpole construction, bronze castings, boat
painting, antifouling, boat design and manufacture. We are passionate boaters and master craftsmen, placing
quality and function above all else!
An
incredible boat range

Over
the last 30 years we have developed our boat range, which was born out of a love for
cruising both near and afar. Our range consists of smaller craft such as the
Wyuna Launch, modelled from the early Pilot Boats at Queenscliff, responsible
for safely guiding ships through the perilous Heads, to 50’ Launches capable of
circumnavigation and outfitted with all the modern amenities such as wood
fires, full galley set-ups and futuristic navigation software.

We
pride ourselves on building boats capable of practical seafaring, and the
foundation of our ethos travels back to the early tales of the Couta Boat.
Working boats are reliable, having proved themselves in the hard years spent
fishing and working local grounds. Our boat range reimagines traditional
working boats and offers those dreaming of a seafaring lifestyle the ideal
vessels for exploration.

Constant refinement

To
date we have built over 130 boats and have dedicated a lifetime to developing a
boat range suitable to any number of purposes. Whether it’s cruising down to
Tasmania and exploring the Kent Group Islands, cray-potting, snorkelling, and
sailing around Australia, taking a Clinker Dinghy for an afternoon cruise, or
racing a Couta Boat off Sorrento, we are a one-stop-shop able to cater to any
seafaring itch!

		<description>Vision Statement

A well lived, uniquely Australian life!

We
see boating and an

affinity

with the sea as an intrinsic aspect to the fabric of Australian lifestyle and envision a future
where its joys and pleasures are widespread, ubiquitous, and sustainable.

Our
new boat storage facility in Sorrento supports The Wooden Boatshop’s vision of boating made
simple and easy. Over his lifetime Tim Phillips OAM has built a rich culture of
boating on the Southern Mornington Peninsula, and we aim to continue to support
its growth into the future.

Enhancing beauty &#38;amp; style in Sorrento

Our
boat storage facility is an incredible structure, and a much-needed update to our
site of 40 years. Critically acclaimed architect March Studio have envisaged a
virtuosic building. The façade is
made of Coreten steel, specifically designed to elevate the aesthetic and feel
of our beautiful local coastline and its material elements.

A trajectory toward sustainability
In
demonstrating our respect and awe for the environment, our focus on creating a
sustainable business practice is well on its way. The Wooden Boatshop is now completely self-sufficient in its energy requirements.
A small business with big ambitions

Sustainability &#38;amp; commitment
to materials&#38;nbsp;

We
are committed to ensuring our business model utilises sustainable and ethically
sourced timbers and does all that is possible to reduce its carbon footprint. We
utilise Cedrela, a plantation grown timber endemic to Africa and whose fragrant
aroma is resistant to insects and termites. Cedrela is a wonderful boatbuilding
timber, due to its strength-to-weight capacity. It was first used by Joshua
Slocum on his boat Liberdade, built in Brazil. Cedrela saws, sands, and bores
well, is easy to glue and nail, produces an excellent finish and has a high impact
resistance.

Likewise,
we also use Iroko and Makore, both timbers are endemic to Africa, and commonly
used for boatbuilding purposes. Iroko is known to be an extremely durable
timber. American White Oak, an excellent all-round timber commonly used in high-grade
furniture and boatbuilding, is utilised for steam bending and much of the finer
details on our boats.

Our
importer upholds the strictest standards of due diligence and ensures timber
products are regulated and traced using licencing, records of audits, log
delivery documentation and forest concession licences.

Built to last

foundation of The Wooden Boatshop rests on that of the historic fishing
vessel, the Couta Boat. We envision boats as being built to last well beyond the
lifetime of those individuals who construct them. We apply our ethos of
long-term thinking to the restoration of historic vessels, and are devoted to
ensuring that the materials we so greatly value do not ever go to waste.

	Achieving net zero
While
we take great pleasure and enjoyment from the natural environment, we
acknowledge Global Warming and Climate Change presents a litany of major threats
toward future generations of seafarers and land-lovers alike. We pledge to achieve Net Zero emissions
by 2030. This will be accomplished through a combination of solar energy and
the transformation of our fleet of vehicles and forklifts to electric power. We plan to install car charging stations at The Wooden Boatshop premisis in Sorrento in the coming years.
A safer, cleaner environment for all!

Hand
crafted by us, in Australia… purchase direct from our factory!

Purchasing
a boat from us is easy and straightforward, but more than that, buyers find it
to be a highly rewarding and enriching experience. The journey toward owning a
Wooden Boatshop build is highly unique. Unlike the dealership model, clients
are purchasing direct from our factory in Australia, where quality, service and craftmanship is of the
utmost importance. Our builds are completely custom and bespoke – hand crafted
from the beginning through to the finer details. Clients often work with us
multiple times over, loving the experience of observing their dreams come to
life that they commission multiple projects over the years.

A
highly enriching experience

Once
you decide you’re interested in purchasing a boat from The Wooden Boatshop, we’ll
give an indication of pricing and options that may be suitable for your boating
requirements and budget. We’ll take you for a sea trial and offer inspections
from our range so you’re able to make the best, most informed decision of your life.

Bespoke,
from beginning to end

Once
you’ve settled on a decision, we’ll give you a lead time of the exciting new
build. Our shipwright &#38;amp; naval architect will discuss the various options available in terms of
final styling, upholstery, optional mechanical systems and so on. Every part of
the building process is completely bespoke, hand tailored to suit your desires.

The
journey is just as great as the destination

Watching
the boat take form is an incredible process to observe.

Client’s

 love popping into
our factory in Sorrento to watch their boats take shape, and chat with our
craftsmen about the technical aspects. Afterall, we are a highly unique and
specialised service. Watching the dream take shape is half the fun.

Realising
the dream!

Upon
completion of your craft, we’ll celebrate the launch (at Sorrento or elsewhere)
and undertake a handover period where our specialists run you through the systems
and show you how to manoeuvre and drive the vessel. We’ll make sure you’re
feeling competent and then we hand over the keys!
